Before leaving for a series of away games, the TMU Bold women’s basketball team won their last home game, 91-40, against the Algoma Thunderbirds. Breaking their four-game losing streak and winning their first game of the regular season. What was originally a very close game became one where the bold dominated. The end of the first quarter was very tight, with a score of 26-23. It was the 2nd quarter that was pivotal as the bold started to play their game and quickly turned things around Coach Carly Clark mentioned that

“We had to be better defensively. We gave up 23 in the first quarter we gave up 17 the rest of the game. So I think once we cleaned that up it made a big difference.

After they regrouped after the first quarter, they were able to really box out the thunderbirds, take advantage of their size and position themselves in a way that shut the thunderbirds down. In turn, these all created turnovers, which generated offense for the bold. Throughout the game, they were able to capitalize on those turnovers and score 30 points.

After the first quarter, the Bold was able to generate offense easily, whether it was taking advantage of foul shots, being there to get those rebounds, or even positioning themselves for turnovers.

Rookie Guard Kait Nichols was an offensive powerhouse throughout the game, with sixteen points, five assists, and sixteen rebounds. She commented on the teams overall :

“We were just in flo, we emphasized more on pushing the ball and not letting it freeze on offense…We just kept attacking the paint, get our post touches, and it worked really well for us”

As a team, they really bounced back offensively and lit up the boards with points in the second, third, and fourth quarter. Along with Kait Nichols, Rachel Farewell and Jayme Foreman contributed significantly to the overall 91 points. This women’s basketball team is all about growth this season, and it showed on the court. Guard Jayme Foreman mentioned

I don’t think we’re too focused on winning or losing but get getting better, and I think this game, we did get better and also got the win.”

These players all possess the mindset and work ethic of champions, which only foreshadows a season worthy of a triumph.
